This dynamic town is nestled in the most beautiful part of northeastern Ontario. Espanola is strategically located 45 minutes from the City of Greater Sudbury and is situated at the junction of Trans Canada Highway 17 and Highway 6 to Manitoulin Island. Espanola was founded in the early 1900s as a company town for the employees of the Spanish River Pulp and Paper Company. The town expanded quickly becoming a bustling, well-serviced community.
With a population of approximately 5300, this municipality has ‘big town’ hospitality! Espanola is host to picturesque wilderness and beautiful lakes, offering numerous opportunities for fishing, boating, camping, and hiking. The town is also home to a charming 9-hole golf course, complete with a country club and tennis courts. The Espanola Regional Recreation Complex offers a fully enclosed state-of-the-art recreation facility featuring a five-lane swimming pool, a sloped wading and splash pool, whirlpool and sauna. In addition, the complex houses an arena, an inclusive fitness centre and two squash courts. Moreover, the Espanola hosts many special events throughout the year.
The 1969 the CBC television series Adventures in Rainbow Country was filmed near Espanola, near the small native community of Birch Island. The series starred an Espanola resident, Lois Maxwell, the actress who played "Miss Moneypenny" in James Bond films such as Dr. No and Goldfinger.
In recent years, Espanola has established itself as the retail hub for the LaCloche-Manitoulin area.
